One of the most prominent Swedish companies in South Asia, Scandinavian Robot Systems India Pvt Ltd (RSP India), has launched its first manufacturing facility in Chennai. The new facility started operations in November 2023. The objective is to start localizing production and make India a major hub for its South Asian operations.

The parent company of RSP is located in Västerås, Sweden, and has been an independent entity for more than 20 years. Previously, the company belonged to ABB’s robotics department. RSP does not manufacture robots but does supply critical parts that make industrial robots more productive, especially in automotive manufacturing industries, where there is a high demand.

According to Arvind Vasu, Managing Director of RSP India, localizing production will enhance cost efficiency and serve the burgeoning robotics market in India better. “By setting up this facility, we can easily customize our products according to customer requirements, reduce automation downtime, and ensure sustainable growth in the region,” said Vasu.

The parent company, based in Västerås, Sweden, has operated independently for more than 20 years, as it was once part of ABB’s robotics division. RSP does not produce robots but provides a critical component to increasing the productivity of industrial robots, especially for sectors such as automotive manufacturing where demand is high.

According to RSP’s President, Eddie Eriksson, the Chennai facility is of strategic importance. “India’s robotics market is growing rapidly, and this new site strengthens our position in South Asia, complementing our operations in Europe and North America,” Eriksson said.

India’s robotics market has been growing very well, and the country’s annual robot consumption has increased from about 1,500 units in 2002 to an estimated 8,500 robots by 2023. Experts project that India’s demand for robots will exceed 10,000 units annually in 2024, which is a big opportunity for RSP and other robotics companies in the region.
