The much-anticipated flyover extension connecting Madley Junction to the CIT Nagar-Usman Road flyover is set to open by the end of May, promising significant traffic relief for Chennai’s T Nagar commuters.

According to Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran, final touches are underway, and the structure will be operational within weeks. The link is expected to ease long-standing congestion near Panagal Park, the T Nagar bus terminus, and the bustling Ranganathan Street shopping area.

Key features of the project include a single-lane entry ramp located 50 metres from Madley Junction. This ramp will allow two- and four-wheelers, including MTC buses, to access the 1.1-km two-lane flyover directly. An exit ramp near the T Nagar bus terminus is also nearing completion, providing smoother descent to the road below.

Exits are planned near Ranganathan Street to help shoppers disembark closer to retail zones. Meanwhile, another entry ramp is on the drawing board to enable access from the opposite side toward Anna Salai.

While the new link won’t connect directly to the existing CIT Nagar-Usman Road flyover, a ground-level corridor is being built to link the two structures. Vehicles will descend and merge through this short stretch, bridge department officials said.

The flyover comes as a timely fix, especially with ongoing underground sewage works disrupting a key access route to the T Nagar bus stop. Residents, like T Arjun Kumar, welcome the development but stress the need for broader upgrades. “The Duraisamy subway needs urgent repairs. Water leaks and broken road surfaces there are a serious hazard,” he said.

For Ashok Nagar, KK Nagar, and Saidapet residents, the new flyover is expected to cut travel time and reduce bottlenecks around T Nagar, one of the city’s busiest commercial and transit hubs.
