This started a new episode in the construction of roads and ring roads around Coimbatore: As far as the construction industry is concerned, paving the way for the construction of Phase 3 of the Coimbatore Western Ring road project, the Tamil Nadu Highways Department has initiated land acquisition for Phase 3 of the Coimbatore Western Ring Road Project. The project, undertaken by the department’s special projects wing, is on track, with Phase 1 expected to be ready soon.

The Western Ring Road spans three phases, linking Mylkal on the Salem-Cochin Road (SHU 52) to Narasimhanaickenpalayam on the Nagapattinam-Gudalur-Mysore Road (NH67). The first phase, covering 11.80 km through Madukkarai, Sundakkamuthur, Perur Chettipalayam, Theethipalayam, and Madampatti, was launched in August 2023 with a budget of $2.5 billion. Officials expect this phase to be completed by September 2025.

Phase 2, stretching 12.8 km from Madampatti to Somayampalayam near Vadavalli, comes with an estimated cost of $3.48 billion. The government has made significant progress in acquiring land for this phase, with $3.2 billion allocated for land purchases across all three phases. This section will traverse key localities such as Perur, West Chithirai Chavadi, Kallikanaicken Palayam, Vadavalli, and Somayampalayam.

The upcoming Phase 3, spanning 8.09 km, will pass through Pannimadai, Nanjundapuram, Kurudampalayam, Narasimhanaickenpalayam, and Gudalur. With a projected cost of $2.25 billion, this phase includes 24 bridges, flyovers, and two subways, enhancing urban mobility. Land acquisition efforts are already underway, requiring 36.41 hectares, of which 34.30 hectares are privately owned. The government has allocated a budget of $300 million for the same purpose, with officials aiming to finalize acquisitions by the end of 2025. The Western Ring Road, once all three phases are completed, is set to reduce congestion and facilitate signal-free transit between multiple sections of the city.
